Poet’s Showcase: ‘Raking’

November 15, 2009

Raking, raking, raking.

No whining leaf blower for me; I have grandchildren to think of.

But the raking!

I take a break and sit down with a good book

And there is Sisyphus.

Enough already, Sisyphus; enough with your rock and your pushing and your sweating.

Come look at my newly raked lawn inundated again with brown and yellow,

Then tell me about futility.

Someone said troubles stay only until we learn all we need from them.

Have I not learned enough?

Do I need a refresher course every fall?

Or do I need to get it through my head that some things are never finished;

They’re just not structured that way.

One campaign, one election, one cause,

One touch, one bouquet, one kiss.

One is not enough.

Thank goodness.
