It’s clear we can no longer ignore the elephant in the blue No. 5 jersey. What has happened to Todd Reesing reminds me of what happened to a former pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, Rick Ankiel. Ankiel’s rookie season in 2000 he was a stud pitcher with a sick curveball who even crushed frequent home runs when he stepped into the batter’s box.

It looked like Ankiel was on his way to being a superstar, then in the playoffs he couldn’t get the ball over the plate. The worse he did the more his confidence dwindled to the point where he was out of baseball. There was no explanation for his collapse.

Reesing’s devolution is just as perplexing. When last we saw the real Reesing, he was carving up Iowa State for nearly 500 yards, and the team’s concern was with the defense. The sad truth is that the defense over the last four games has played well enough for us to win. Reesing, on the other hand, has been a human turnover machine.

I think it’s time we turn the offense over to Kerry Meier. Kerry came to KU to play quarterback. Reesing beat him out and instead of crying about it Meier has done everything the team has asked of him. Now it’s time to repay his hard work. Mangino should open up the QB competition between Meier and Reesing, because honestly Reesing has done enough to lose his job.
