25 years ago: School board votes to issue unilateral teacher contracts

The Lawrence school board voted 5-2 to issue unilateral teacher contracts despite a 300-signature petition and a statement describing teacher dissatisfaction presented by two Lawrence Education Assn. members. Board members Maggie Carttar and Dan Pulliam voted against the contract move. Salary adjustment issues were at stake and the negotiations had dragged on seemingly interminably since the past spring.

Kansas Power and Light got a tongue-lashing at a city commission study session because it seemed unwilling to participate in a “voluntary checkoff” plan that would allow customers to earmark extra payments to their utility bills to aid the needy. State Rep. Jessie Branson was among the critics. She had organized the original Warm Hearts program to aid the needy and was incensed at the KPL reluctance to help.

A permanent injunction was granted ordering a rural Lawrence man to upgrade the system supplying drinking water to tenants of his mobile home court south of town. The injunction was against Otto Dreher.
