25 years ago: KU officials address bigotry, anti-Semitism

Free-flying astronaut Joe Allen captured a wayward satellite in a historic space salvage and in a second high-drama episode used his hands to help move the huge payload into Discovery’s cargo bay when a stowing mechanism would not work. Never before had a human latched onto an orbiting satellite, nor had one been retrived for return to Earth to be repaired and launched again.

Kansas University officials again were concentrating on issues of bigotry, anti-Semitism and racism after issues of all of these had arisen recently. Further, new battle lines were being drawn regarding sexual preference and the heterosexual and homosexual segments of local society.

David Stillie, 39, had been interim minister and full-time minister of the Antioch Baptist Church here, and also was a reserve Army lieutenant colonel after seeing combat in Vietnam. He had served 17 years in the Army and had been at his local church post since July. He said he found no serious conflicts in the two roles.
