I-70 accident sends driver to hospital

A 51-year-old driver who fled the scene of an accident on Interstate 70 Saturday afternoon suffered serious injuries.

At around 6 p.m., Gerald Mann Jr., of Topeka, was traveling west on I-70 when his 2008 Hyundai hit a maroon Mazda that was traveling in the left-hand lane, Kansas State Trooper Corey Davis said.

Both vehicles spun out of control near mile marker 206, just east of Lawrence.

The Mazda rolled off the road, but neither the passenger nor the driver in the car suffered major injuries.

Mann continued driving for about a mile, Davis said, before the car’s hood flew up and a tire blew out, causing Mann to lose control of the car and roll into a ditch.

Mann suffered serious injuries and was flow by air ambulance to a Kansas City hospital.

Alcohol is suspected to be involved in the accident, which is under investigation, Davis said.
