Water, sewer service may be extended

Bottom line

City commissioners will consider moving ahead on engineering work to extend water and sewer service to the Lawrence Municipal Airport.

Background

Commissioners have expressed an interest in extending water and sewer service to the airport after Lawrence-based DAR Corp. said it wanted to build a facility at the airport that would manufacture prototype aircraft. The company estimates the facility would employ 65 people within the next five years, but sewer and water service would be needed for the building. BG Consultants is proposing $86,000 worth of engineering work for the water system. The company is offering two options on the extension of the sewer system. For about $38,000, the company will study whether alternative types of on-site sewage treatment systems can be used at the airport. Or, if the city doesn’t want to examine an alternative form of sewage treatment, the company will do the design work for a traditional lift station and force main for about $146,000.
