Police said they issued a citation, but made no arrests, in a disturbance-with-weapons case outside of Cross Town Tavern, 1910 Haskell Ave.

Susan Hadl, a sergeant with the Lawrence Police Department, said that officers were dispatched to the scene at 1:50 a.m. Callers told emergency dispatchers that somebody was waving a gun around outside of the bar.

“A long-existing dispute between parties, who were patrons of the bar, developed into an argument,” Hadl said. “It carried over into the parking lot outside of the bar. One individual vowed to return with a weapon and, moments later, did so.”

Witnesses told police that the 39-year-old man waved the weapon around haphazardly, uttered some angry words and got into the passenger side of a red Chevrolet truck. Hadl said the parking lot was “chaotic” by the time police arrived.

“Vehicles were leaving, people were scurrying,” she said. Police then attempted to secure the parking lot. They stopped the red truck and another truck leaving the scene, discovering that the occupants of both vehicles were “prime players in the incident.”

They scoured the red truck but were unable to find a weapon. When they inspected the other vehicle, a Dodge pickup, they found a handgun. The 45-year-old owner was cited for having a weapon in close proximity to a bar.

Police exhausted measures to find a weapon connected to the original suspect, Hadl said. She said they would write a report and forward it to prosecutors.
