State historical society cuts 10 percent of its employees

? The Kansas State Historical Society has eliminated a dozen full-time positions from its budget as it seeks to slash spending.

Spokeswoman Bobbie Athon said the jobs are being cut through layoffs and by shifting some full-time positions to part-time.

Athon said Tuesday that there may be other cuts to come. She said the organization is still working through the details.

The cuts were made Monday after the Legislature approved reductions of 2.75 percent for most state agencies last week.

That means the society will have $5.4 million, instead of the $6.2 million budget it anticipated.

Before the cuts, the Kansas State Historical Society had about 100 employees.
