Instead of facing a trial, a 41-year-old man has pleaded no contest to three charges related to an April fire at a Eudora woman’s mobile home.

Douglas County District Judge Paula Martin on Monday morning ruled that Donzell Quinn should stand trial on charges of arson, making a criminal threat and misdemeanor criminal damage to property.

But minutes later, after conferring with his defense attorney, Michael Clarke, Quinn agreed to enter the plea instead.

Sarah Klebenstein and her 17-year-old son escaped their home April 14 after a trash can was set on fire and burned the mobile home.

Klebenstein and another witness during the preliminary hearing identified Quinn as the man who ran from the porch when the trash can caught fire.

Officers later arrested Quinn in Lawrence. Quinn’s sentence will depend on his criminal history, but Martin said that Quinn would likely face prison time under state guidelines because prosecutors said Quinn has felony convictions in another state.

Martin will sentence him June 17.
