Improve the fuel economy of your RV

All motorists share one common goal: to get the most mileage from a gallon of gas. The desire for the best fuel efficiency is especially strong among recreational vehicle owners.

Many fuel economy measures practiced by car owners also apply to RVs. But there are a few more things an RV owner can do to get the maximum miles from a gallon. Here are a number of fuel-saving insights:

• Compare gas mileage notes with other RV owners, especially those who have a motor home similar to yours.

• Follow the recommended service and maintenance schedules; keeping an RV tuned up and in top running condition saves fuel. A poorly tuned engine can lower fuel economy by 10 to 20 percent. A clean air filter can significantly improve fuel economy, and you should use the recommended grade of motor oil.

• Check and adjust RV tire pressure to the proper pressure. This can increase fuel economy by three percent, and help cut down the chance of premature tire wear and or blowouts. Use a quality air pressure gauge to check your tires when they’re cold, and before traveling more than one mile.

• Don’t let the engine idle. Shut the engine off when the RV sits for more than a few minutes.

• Use overdrive to decreasing the engines speed. Employing the cruise control can also save fuel because it keeps the vehicle at a constant speed rather than variable speeds. Speeding and rapid acceleration reduces fuel economy anywhere from five to 33 percent.

• Check the RV’s oxygen sensor. A faulty sensor can cause a 40 percent reduction in fuel economy.

• Travel light. Added weight reduces fuel economy significantly.

• Turn on the dash air conditioner when it is absolutely necessary. This will put less stress on gas mileage performance.

• Fuel up with regular gas unless the RV’s owner’s manual specifies a higher-octane gas.
