The cost of riding the bus between Lawrence and Johnson County is going up.

Rates for the K-10 Connector — a daily bus route connecting points at Kansas University and elsewhere in Lawrence with stops at KU’s Edwards Campus and Johnson County Community College — are among those proposed to be increased by Johnson County Transit.

The increased rates would take effect June 1.

Proposed fares for the K-10 Connector:

• $3 for a one-way ride, an increase from $2.50.

• $27 for a 10-ride pass, up 80 percent from the current $15.

• $100 for a monthly commuter pass, or $95 for an employer-subsidized monthly commuter pass, both new offerings.

Johnson County Transit, commonly known as the JO, has not increased fares since 1999, said Alice Amrein, transportation director. And she notes that while other transit operators have curtailed service because of budget issues, the JO has bought additional transit coaches and is expanding service on several routes.

The K-10 Connector is among the fastest-growing offerings of the JO, she said, and the service’s original fares always were intended to be replaced once the program had completed its two-year start-up.

“I think everyone realizes that the K-10 Connector has been very successful and is now beyond the pilot project phase,” she said, explaining the reasoning behind the proposed fare increases.

The K-10 Connector draws thousands of riders each month, and earlier this year the JO added coaches and boosted the frequency of stops and pickups at each stop. Last year the service provided 115,000 trips, up 71 percent from the year before.

The K-10 Connector runs weekdays and weeknights to three stops in Lawrence: KU’s Park & Ride lot at Clinton Parkway and Crestline Drive; the southwestern corner of 19th Street and Naismith Drive; and the intersection of 19th Street and Haskell Avenue. Its Johnson County stops include the Carlsen Center at JCCC and the northwestern side of the roundabout at the Edwards Campus in Overland Park.
