Police investigating shooting outside Club Axis, as well as two other incidents overnight

Lawrence police are investigating a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning in the parking lot of Club Axis, 821 Iowa.

A 25-year-old Lawrence man who was shot was taken by friends to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. An officer on routine patrol heard a gunshot in the parking lot of the nightclub at 2:05 a.m. Sunday.

Lawrence police Sgt. Ted Bordman said officers interviewed witnesses and searched the parking lot directly west of Club Axis.

The club has been connected to several incidents of violence. Among them: On March 7, a 27-year-old Lawrence man arrested in connection with a double stabbing incident that began as two vehicles left Club Axis. One vehicle cut off another as they traveled southbound on Iowa Street, leading to the fight in the parking lot of Burger King, 1301 W. 23rd St.

On June 1 of last year, a Taser was used on a man who was attacking a police officer outside Club Axis, and last March, police seized a gun from a car parked near the club.

Club Axis was also the site of a May 2007 brawl that led to two arrests. Two men were arrested for allegedly kicking and hitting a man found lying on the ground outside the club.

Police also are investigating two other incidents that occurred early Sunday:

• About 12:42 a.m. Sunday, police were called by area residents who heard gunshots in the 1500 block of Oak Hill Avenue, about a mile east of Massachusetts Street. Lawrence police Sgt. Paul Fellers said that officers discovered a residence and a vehicle that had been struck by several gunshots. The residents were home at the time, but no one was injured.

• About 25 minutes later, police were called to 11th and Vermont streets, where three Lawrence residents told officers a man armed with a knife robbed them. The suspect demanded the victims’ wallets, and punched one of the victims after obtaining only one wallet, Fellers said. The suspect is described as a white man with a goatee in his late 20s, about 5 feet, 9 inches tall. The man, who was wearing a brown hoodie, was last seen running northwest.

No further information on any of these crimes was available Sunday night. Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 832-7509 or leave an anonymous message on the TIPS hot line at 832-TIPS (8471).
