Beam work to close lane on turnpike

Another load of massive steel beams is on its way to Lawrence, and that means another temporary lane closure is expected on the Kansas Turnpike.

The beams — at least four, stacked on an oversized-load trailer — are expected to arrive sometime between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. today above the construction site for a new turnpike bridge being built over the Kansas River.

The trailer’s arrival, and subsequent unloading, would require that a section of the right lane be closed for traffic headed west. The temporary closure — which would be canceled upon the arrival of inclement weather — would start just before the East Lawrence interchange, and stretch just beyond.

The interchange, which is exit 204, will not be closed.

The lane closure should last anywhere from one to two hours, said Rex Fleming, the turnpike’s project engineer.
