State offering grants for using waste tires

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is offering grants for purchasing playground cover and other products derived from waste tires.

Through these grants, KDHE intends to encourage the production and sale of commercial products, including playground cover, made from recycled Kansas waste tires. These efforts benefit waste reduction by removing material from the waste stream to conserve landfill space and reduce the need for new solid waste facilities.

Local units of government are eligible to apply for funding that will provide up to 50 percent of the total cost to purchase and install eligible products made from waste tires. Last year, 61 grants were given to local governments.

The deadline for applications is April 6.
