Volunteers sought for battlefield cleanup

April 4 is cleanup day at the country’s Civil War battlefields, cemeteries and shrines, and that includes Black Jack Battlefield and Nature Park near Baldwin City.

Volunteers are sought to remove dilapidated outbuildings, clean up trash, collect sticks and branches and spruce up the area.

The work begins at 9 a.m. The site is 163 E. 2000 Road, or 3 miles southeast of Baldwin City off U.S. Highway 56.

For more information, call Kerry Altenbernd, 785-883-2106, or go online to volunteers@blackjackbattlefield.org.

The cleanup is part of National Park Day and is underwritten with a grant from History (formerly the History Channel).

It is a partnership with Take Pride in America, a division of the U.S. Department of Interior.
