Wheel Genius: Road work this week

Among projects expected to affect travel in Lawrence and the region:

Lawrence

• Drivers may expect delays of up to 15 minutes at a time Monday and Tuesday on U.S. Highway 59 south of Lawrence, as crews block the highway’s northbound side to relocate utilities. The work is set for daytime hours at the highway’s intersection with Wells Overlook Road, 2.5 miles south of town, and drivers are advised to take alternate routes. The work is part of construction of a new U.S. 59 between Lawrence and Ottawa.

• The intersection of 13th Street and Oread Avenue will be closed in spring break for work on a water line associated with the construction of The Oread, a hotel and mixed-use project north of Kansas University’s main campus. Other restrictions remain in place: 12th Street closed to traffic headed west, from Oread Avenue to Indiana Street; and Indiana closed from 11th Street to 12th.

• Mississippi Street will be closed this week between its intersections with Jayhawk Boulevard and Memorial Drive for work on sanitary sewers.

• A stretch of East 902 Road, below the Clinton Lake dam, will be closed beginning Monday for resurfacing work. The closure will mean the city’s Mutt Run Dog Park will be closed, and access to Eagle Bend Golf Course will be limited to traffic coming in from the south, on East 902 Road from south of the dam. The work is scheduled to last into mid-April.

• The right lane for traffic headed west on Sixth, from Folks Road to the intersection with Wakarusa Drive, is closed for extension of an existing right-turn lane. Traffic headed north on Wakarusa, from just south of Sixth to a point just south of Overland Drive, also is squeezed to accommodate work on a new right-turn lane being added north of Sixth.

Interstate 70

• The exit ramp for traffic headed east on Interstate 70 to enter Kansas Highway 4/Oakland Expressway in Shawnee County will be closed from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday for repairs. Drivers should exit at Carnahan/Deer Creek Parkway, head north on Deer Creek Parkway to Sixth Street, then east to the expressway/U.S. Highway 40 interchange onto U.S. 40, said Kimberly Qualls, spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Kansas Highway 10

• Traffic headed west on Kansas Highway 10 will not be able to use the right lane at Woodland Road in Johnson County. The closure is set for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, for repairs to a bridge rail.

Interstate 435

• Traffic headed south on Interstate 435 will be squeezed into two lanes on a bridge that crosses the Missouri Pacific Railroad in Wyandotte County, about a third of a mile northeast of the interchange of I-435 and Kansas Highway 5/North 93rd Street. Work will be conducted during daylight hours weekdays, with occasional Saturday work, Qualls said. The project is scheduled for completion in late April.

l The right two lanes for traffic headed north on I-435, from I-70 to State Avenue, will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday in Wyandotte County for sign-installation work.

Interstate 35

• Lanes will be closed for traffic headed north on Interstate 35, from U.S. Highway 56 in Gardner to U.S. Highway 169 in Olathe, during overnight hours beginning at 10 p.m. Monday and continuing through 5 a.m. Tuesday. The schedule is expected to be repeated through Thursday morning. The closures are to accommodate work on a new bridge for an interchange at Lone Elm Road.

U.S. Highway 69

• The right lane for traffic headed north on U.S. Highway 69 will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday at 99th Street in Johnson County for utility work. The right lane for traffic headed south at the intersection will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
