Randall family shares their hilltop retreat

Jeff and Kelly Randall combined the charm of an existing 1920s Craftsman-style bungalow with an extensive remodel and addition to create a hilltop retreat in south Lawrence.

The custom-designed home was built to take full advantage of breathtaking panoramic views of Lawrence and the Kansas University campus from its perch near the summit of 130 acres.

“We wanted our home to be family-friendly and comfortable,” Kelly Randall says in describing the style of the home they share with their three sons.

The original 1,300-square-foot cottage was incorporated into the plans of the 6,300-square-foot expansion, and the style pays homage to its history. True Craftsman origins, a spacious front porch with stone-based posts, leads to antique double doors surrounded by cedar shade siding. Wood, rescued from an unsalvageable 100-year-old barn on the site, has been repurposed to add architectural interest to the cone ceiling of an octagonal breakfast room and the paneling of a striking tower home office.
