Collins, Taylor sweep Big 12 awards

KU’s Sherron Collins and Tyshawn Taylor were named this week’s Big 12 player and rookie of the week, the Big 12 announced Monday.

Collins was selected as top player for the second straight week after averaging 25.5 points, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals in KU’s victories over No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 8 Missouri. Collins’ 26 points against OU also tied a career-high. The 5-foot-11 guard made 14 of 28 shots (50 percent) and nine of 14 three-pointers (64.3 percent).

Taylor, meanwhile, averaged 20.5 points in the Jayhawks’ two wins. He scored a career-high 26 against OU on 8-for-13 shooting. In his last two games, he has made 13 of 20 field goals (65 percent), four of six threes (66.7 percent) and added nine assists.

Collins has been named Big 12 player of the week three times this year, while Taylor picked up his fourth rookie honor — tying him for fifth-most in Big 12 history.
