Lawrence man faces several charges following high-speed chase

Douglas County prosecutors filed charges Monday against a 20-year-old Lawrence man accused of crashing his car after leading police on multiple car chases Sunday morning.

Richard Demby had his first appearance in court Monday and was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude officers, obstructing the legal process, reckless driving and various drug and driving with a suspended license charges, court and jail records state.

Lawrence police said they arrested Demby at 5:35 a.m. Sunday in the 500 block of Oklahoma Street, after he crashed his car near Kansas and Montana streets, hitting two parked vehicles in a driveway, and then ran from officers.

The incident began more than 20 minutes earlier when officers attempted to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation in the 2000 block of Iowa Street. Officers were involved in two chases with the suspect vehicle, after stopping the first one because of high speeds.

Demby is scheduled to return to court at 2 p.m. Wednesday. He’s being held in jail on $4,000 bond.

In December, District Judge Michael Malone sentenced Demby to three years probation after convictions of two counts of robbery in connection with an August 2008 incident.
