Judge delays rapist’s sentencing
A judge has delayed sentencing for a man convicted of raping a Kansas University student 12 years ago.
Robert Grey was scheduled to be sentenced Friday morning in Douglas County District Court, after a jury convicted him in May of the 1997 rape.
Grey kidnapped a woman at gunpoint from the Naismith Hall parking lot, drove her to a secluded area near the tennis courts at Lawrence High School and raped her.
Advances in DNA technology helped identify him a decade after the crime was committed.
Defense attorney Jessica Travis asked for the delay, due to questions about her client’s criminal history. The defense also plans to file a motion seeking a reduced sentence.
Judge Peggy Kittel set a new sentencing date for Aug. 4.
