Danielle McCray survived the cut.

McCray, who’ll be a Kansas University senior this fall, was one of 12 basketball players chosen for the USA Women’s World University Games team.

“This is really an exciting moment for me,” said McCray who was informed Monday of her selection Monday by USA Basketball. “It’s a dream come true.”

The U.S. women will compete at the World University Games on July 1-11 in Belgrade, Serbia.

McCray earned first-team All-Big 12 honors last winter after leading Kansas to a 22-14 record and an appearance in the WNIT title game. She ranked second on the Big 12 and eighth in the NCAA by averaging 21.6 points a game as a junior.

“Ever since being named a finalist in May, I have been in the gym non-stop,” said McCray, an Olathe East High product.

The dozen members of the U.S. team include two-time USA Basketball gold medalists Jantel Lavender of Ohio State, Maya Moore of UConn and Kayla Pedersen of Stanford.

Also on the squad are Tina Charles and Tiffany Hayes of UConn, Alexis Gray-Lawson of California, Ashley Houts of Georgia, Jacinta Monroe of Florida State, Ta’Shia Phillips of Xavier, Jeanette Pohlen of Stanford and Danielle Robinson of Oklahoma.

McCray is the first KU player to earn a spot on the U.S. World University Games since Lynette Woodard in 1979. KU coach Bonnie Henrickson was an assistant coach on the 1999 team that won a silver medal.
