From the Lawrence Daily World for June 20, 1909: “A gain of more than $6,000 has been made the past year by the Lawrence post office. There were substantial increases in every department and it appears that an extra carrier must be hired to handle the growing business. … The Douglas County Fair Assn. met today and established an impressive list of purses for the fair this September. There will be five days of racing and the prize money is considered outstanding. It should be quite an event after the weather ruled out a fair the past fall.”
