State treasurer puts out consumer alert about Web site

Kansas State Treasurer Dennis McKinney on Friday warned Kansans about a Web site that asks for payment before they can discover if they have any unclaimed cash or property.

He said the site, www.cashunclaimed.com, was not sponsored by his office, unlike www.KansasCash.com or www.kansasstatetreasurer.com or www.MissingMoney.com for national searches.

“Kansans should be warned that claiming what is rightfully yours should never cost you anything,” McKinney said. “I ask that anyone who is instructed to pay a fee in order to claim their missing property please contact my office immediately.”

McKinney put out a consumer alert on the Web site, www.cashunclaimed.com, which instructs users that access for 30 days will cost $11 and automatically renew every 30 days until the subscription is canceled. Users are also given the option to buy access for one year at $29 or a lifetime pass at $99.
