100 years ago: Work on university boulevard to begin

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 17, 1909: Work is due to begin soon on a university boulevard and hillside drive, both of which are needed. . . . The wheat is filling out and ripening fast in Douglas County. It looks good in the valley but poor in the uplands and yields will not be as good as first anticipated. Large acreages have been plowed up and the total yield is due to be cut down quite a bit. Heavy harvest should begin in about two weeks for most fields. . . . Chancellor Strong of the university learned yesterday that Mrs. Snow, widow of the former chancellor, has been granted a Carnegie Pension by the trustees of that fund. Mrs. Snow is to get $850 a year for life from the fund, established by Andrew Carnegie as a means of rewarding aged college professors and their widows. Mrs. Snow is the first person connected with the University of Kansas to take advantage of the fund and also the first Kansan. . . . The Italian auto in the race to Seattle is a week behind everyone else and may not even make it for the opening of the exhibition designed to honor the coast to coast competitors. There have been many mechanical troubles for the car which has passed through here.
