100 years ago: Electric line work begins

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 12, 1909: The first carload of ties for the new electric line arrived this morning and this afternoon the work of distributing them along the street on the route of the line began. Several more carloads of ties will be needed to complete the work. Rails should begin arriving soon. . . . One man was killed and 11 injured last night when the wind blew a passenger train off a trestle near Sweetwater, Texas, and plunged it into the Brazos River. . . . From all directions, Indian graduates and former students of Haskell Institute are pouring into the community for the 25th birthday celebration of Haskell. A huge tent city has been set up to accommodate all the visitors. Most surprising is the great distances so many have traveled to get here and that is quite a tribute to the school. . . . A.L. Selig will be the next poor commissioner for Douglas County. He was a darkhorse candidate but is an old soldier and the appointment is based partly on his former service. A long, bitter fight for the job has been ended.
