A Topeka woman who struck a Lawrence police officer with her car during a chase in December, has reached a plea deal with prosecutors.

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson said Barbara Jo Schnegelsiepen, 28, entered a guilty plea late Thursday afternoon to two counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and one count of aggravated assault, involving a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper.

She was facing seven felony charges and three misdemeanor counts, stemming from the chase on Dec. 2.

Prosecutors said Schnegelsiepen, who was a suspect in a burglary, was fleeing police in a stolen car.

She struck Lawrence police officer Doug Payne with her vehicle on U.S. Highway 40 east of Big Springs as he was trying to place stop sticks on the highway.

The case was scheduled to go to trial Monday.

Branson said he was pleased with the outcome.

“We gave her approximately two years off,” he said. “She’s still looking at serving more than 10 years in prison. I don’t have to put the officers through this. It was a pretty traumatic experience.”

Branson said dismissing the other charges as part of the plea deal would not effect Schnegelsiepen’s sentence.

“The additional counts didn’t increase her prison time,” he said.

Branson also said that by entering the plea Schnegelsiepen gave up her right to an appeal.
