Immediate needs

• Head for the Cure is organizing a 5K run/walk on Sept. 13 to benefit the Chris Anthony Brain Tumor Research Fund. Volunteer duties include directing runners on the correct route, handing out water/food, helping with table setup and take down, checking participants in, and helping with registration. Volunteers would need to arrive between 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. and stay until 10 a.m.

For more information, visit the Web site www.headforthecure.org. To volunteer, send an e-mail to headforthecurelawrence@gmail.com or call 785-856-0434.

• The Salvation Army still is seeking volunteers for its “Christmas in July” fundraiser. The campaign runs Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 1, and instead of bell-ringing, volunteers will dance to Christmas-themed beach music. Volunteers are needed to help at the three campaign locations: Checkers Foods, 2300 La., and the Hy-Vee Food Stores at 4000 W. Sixth St. and 3504 Clinton Parkway.

To volunteer or for more information, contact Aaron Smith at 843-4188, ext. 102, or by e-mail at aaron_smith@ usc.salvationarmy.org.

• The United Way Community Garage Sale needs volunteers to help out on July 31 and Aug 1. Also needed are donations of gently used clothing, household goods, furniture and kitchen items to be sold.

Donations can be dropped off at the Eagles Lodge, 1803 W. Sixth St., from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday or 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on July 29 and 30.

For more information, call 865-5030.
