Texas Tech’s Harrell heads to CFL

Graham Harrell is headed to the CFL.
The record-setting Texas Tech quarterback signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Thursday.
Harrell is the NCAA Division I career leader in touchdown passes but wasn’t drafted by the NFL. His workout with the Cleveland Browns did not result in a contract.
Harrell had to fight the perception that his numbers were the product of Texas Tech’s offensive system and he didn’t have the arm strength to succeed in the NFL.
The Roughriders already are two games into their season and have three quarterbacks on their roster. Their starter is former North Carolina quarterback Darian Durant, who had only four career CFL starts coming into the season.

S. Miss. lifts suspension
Jackson, Miss. — Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora has lifted the suspension of record-setting running back Damion Fletcher. Fletcher has been suspended since firing a gun in the parking lot of an apartment complex last winter. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor last March and was sentenced to six months probation and community service.
Fedora told the crowd Thursday at an alumni event in Jackson that the senior from Biloxi has done everything asked of him since his suspension with the goal of returning for his senior season.
Already Southern Miss’ leading career rusher, the former Conference USA offensive player of the year could become the ninth player in Bowl Subdivision history to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his four seasons.
Southern Miss will play at Kansas on Sept. 26.

’Skins take Kentucky DE
Ashburn, Va. — The Washington Redskins have selected Kentucky defensive end Jeremy Jarmon in the third round of the NFL supplemental draft. The Redskins will give up their third-round pick in the 2010 NFL draft.
Jarmon acknowledged in May he had been declared ineligible for his senior season by the NCAA because he tested positive for a banned substance. He said the result came from a dietary supplement. The Redskins say he’s the first player they’ve ever taken in a supplemental draft.
Jolly charge to be refiled
Houston — Prosecutors say they expect to refile a felony drug charge against Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Johnny Jolly Jr. after dropping the case.
The 26-year-old had been set for trial Friday on the drug possession charge. He was arrested last July in Houston for allegedly having at least 200 grams of codeine, which is a controlled substance.
Romo spoofs endorsements
Dallas — Tony Romo would love to be a Super Bowl-winning quarterback like Peyton Manning.
The Dallas Cowboys quarterback is starring in an online video spoof, endorsing a few tongue-in-cheek items. It smacks of Manning being the tongue-in-cheek pitchman for many products, which earned him a guest-host gig on “Saturday Night Live.”
In Romo’s video, he says you might not have realized he endorses some “50,000” products — including gasoline that tastes like chocolate and vice versa.

Texas coach sentenced
Dallas — Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido was sentenced Thursday to four days in jail for a drunken driving conviction, though he might not serve any time.
Garrido’s attorney, Michael Burnett, said Travis County jail officials will decide how long to keep the winningest coach in Division I after he reports sometime before Aug. 15. Burnett said the 70-year-old Garrido received two days’ credit when he was arrested and could earn the other two days simply by getting processed.
Sheriff’s spokesman Roger Wade said any comment on how long Garrido will stay is “pure speculation” right now.”
Garrido was fined $500 by County Court-at-Law Judge Elisabeth Earle and had his driver’s license suspended for 90 days after the misdemeanor first-time offense.
Garrido was arrested in downtown Austin in January when police noticed he was driving without his headlights on. He pleaded guilty two weeks later.

Two tied at U.S. Bank
Milwaukee — Greg Chalmers had success with his new putting grip, and Jeff Klauk only needed nine putts in his first nine holes for each to shoot 6-under 64s during the first round Thursday in the U.S. Bank Championship.
Chalmers started his day with two bogeys before making birdies on five of his final six holes on the front nine, including a 55-foot putt on No. 4 followed by a 26-footer on No. 5. He also birdied the final three holes.
Frank Lickliter II, Tag Ridings, Jason Gore and Skip Kendall all finished at 4-under 66. Former Kansas University golfer Gary Woodland had a 78.

D’backs, Rockies pick site
Phoenix — The Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies are NL West rivals. Now they’re partners in a spring training facility planned for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community near Phoenix. Under an agreement announced Thursday, the tribe will build an 11,000-seat ballpark and a complex that includes 12 practice fields, training facilities and offices.
Brewers’ Bush ailing
Cincinnati — The Milwaukee Brewers probably aren’t going to get starter Dave Bush back next week as hoped. The Brewers decided to send the right-hander for another medical exam on Thursday, a day after he had a poor showing in a minor league rehab start.
Bush has been on the disabled list since June 23 because of a small tear in his right triceps, which made his arm feel tired. He made his second medical rehab start on Wednesday for Double-A Huntsville and gave up six hits and five runs in only three innings, struggling to throw strikes.
Cubs sign reliever Ryan
Washington — The Chicago Cubs signed former Toronto closer B.J. Ryan to a minor league deal Thursday, hoping to add another left-hander to their bullpen. Released by the Blue Jays earlier this month, the 33-year-old Ryan will first report to the Cubs’ spring training complex in Mesa, Ariz.

Wolves seek Rubio buyout
Minneapolis — The Minnesota Timberwolves cannot do much financially to help Ricky Rubio with a multimillion-dollar buyout of his contract with DKV Joventut in Spain. So team president David Kahn is heading across the Atlantic to meet with the team personally in hopes of lowering the $6.6 million price tag that has threatened to keep the wunderkind point guard in Europe for at least next season.

F1 team fires Bourdais
Faenza, Italy — Formula One team Toro Rosso has fired driver Sebastien Bourdais. Bourdais, a four-time Champ Car series champion in the United States, had been unimpressive in the 2009 season, his second in F1.
