Cy Young used to be a pitcher. Now he’s a golfer. He’ll be playing in the two-day Lawrence Amateur Golf Association City Tournament that starts Saturday and concludes Sunday.

Young will compete in the Super Senior division. He won’t be signing baseball cards because he’s not that Cy Young.

A resident of Lawrence, Young, 77, did pitch for the Junction City American Legion team. He’s 511 major-league victories short of the more famous athlete of the same name.

Young, who tees off at 7:16 a.m., said he normally plays at the Baldwin Golf Association Golf Course, a track in Baldwin City that features sand greens.

“Can’t afford to play at Alvamar or Eagle Bend on a regular basis,” said Young, a Lawrence resident since 1972.

Mike Scott, the Lawrence businessman, not the former Cy Young Award winner, will compete in the Senior Division.

As always, Conrad Roberts will be tough to beat in the men’s championship flight, and Carol Rau will contend in the women’s division.

All Saturday rounds in the stroke-play tournament will take place at Eagle Bend. All Sunday rounds will be at Alvamar public.
