Two 19-year-old men were arrested about midnight Sunday after an altercation ended in a foot chase.

The two men who were arrested, police said, were involved Saturday night in a road-rage incident with another group of people south of Lawrence. According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl, the suspects and the victims stopped at the parking lot outside IHOP, 3102 Iowa.

The suspects, one of whom was carrying a baseball bat, assaulted the victims, police said. One of the victims stole the baseball bat from one of the suspects, at which point the suspect grabbed another bat from his vehicle and returned to the altercation.

When police arrived at 11:43 p.m., the suspect without the baseball bat fled westbound on foot. An officer pursued the suspect and caught him near the 2500 block of West 31st Street.

The suspect who fled, a 19-year-old from Lawrence, was arrested on charges of battery and obstructing legal procedure. He was arrested on charges of simple battery because he did not use a weapon in the assault, Hadl said.

The suspect with the baseball bat, a 19-year-old Rose Hill native, did not flee, but flipped his baseball bat in the direction of the victims instead of relinquishing it peacefully. He was arrested on charges of two counts of aggravated assault, minor in possession of alcohol, and possession of an open container. The Rose Hill man was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for injuries suffered during the incident.

Neither victim was transported to the hospital.
