From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 31, 1909: “Prof. W.H. Carruth has founded a university scholarship for students of Lawrence High School for the purpose of German studies. … Reports keep coming in about the damages and losses from the gale that hit here the night before last. Chimneys tumbled into homes, roofs were ripped off in many cases and it will take a lot of money and work to compensate for what happened over much of the community, including the university. Many are reporting frightening experiences and minor injuries.”
