Republican leaders in the Kansas Senate say they’re now looking to cut $300 million from the current state budget.

Legislative researchers are projecting a deficit of $186 million and that gap must be closed by June 30. That figure is based on revenue collections through December.

But Senate GOP leaders expect revenues to continue to fall short of expectations, meaning the projected deficit would grow.

Senate GOP leaders announced their new target during a Thursday morning caucus meeting. There were no objections from the Republican senators present.

Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt said there’s not yet a consensus on how to eliminate the deficit. The Senate Ways and Means Committee is working on a bill.
