The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at Kansas University is scheduled to honor Black History Month with an event honoring Barbara Jordan.

In 1966, Jordan became the first African-American elected to a Senate seat in Texas since 1883. Jordan, who died in 1996, is remembered for her oratory skills, including a 1976 keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention.

At the event Jordan’s longtime friend and colleague Max Sherman, professor emeritus and former dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, will discuss her life and career.

A book signing will follow. The event, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3, at the Dole Institute.
