Editor’s note: Today’s letters to the editor are from Southwest Junior High students learning about persuasive writing.

To the editor:

The Fair Labor Standards Act states that there is a minimum employment age of 14, and there are also a limited number of hours for people under 16 can work.

I think that the start of the employment age is low enough already. I think it is a good idea to start the employment age at 14. Besides there are a lot of jobs kids can do if they are under 14, like babysitting or mowing lawns.

I am one of those kids who wanted a job so I could help the family, go on vacations, and buy a nice car or house when I grow up. But still I have to wait until I turn 14. I think kids should be able to start training for certain jobs they want to pursue. Like being an engineer or a marine biologist to prepare them for the working world that lies ahead in their path of life. So come on teens, get out there and find a job wrapping presents for friends and neighbors, or make fun decorative crafts to sell. Then you’ll be able to feel what it is like to be a working adult.
