Editor’s note: Today’s letters to the editor are from Southwest Junior High students learning about persuasive writing.

To the editor:

Do you love animals? Do you want to help them? Then help donate money to the Lawrence Humane Society. The money will go to food, toys, shelter, and a larger building for the animals. Approximately 370 animals have been shipped off to the Topeka Humane Society, Helping Hands. Nothing is really wrong with this except that Topeka is a kill shelter, after about three months of the pet’s stay, if the animal hasn’t been adopted, they will put the animal down.

If Lawrence had a larger humane society there would be a larger selection and the animals will be able to live there longer with a greater chance of being adopted. Even helping out with supplies will make a difference. A few things that they need are: animal food, dog houses, animal carriers, trash bags, grooming tools, blankets, toys, cash, and even volunteers.

Adoption will help make more space, help reduce overpopulation, and give happy animals a cozy home. The Lawrence Humane Society provides shelter for 5,500 dogs, cats, and other small animals each year. They also shelter stray animals, including the injured pets. They try as hard as they can to help you find your pet, and to return a lost pet. And they help find the best pet for you.
