Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 12, 1909: “To run the city government of Lawrence the past year cost the citizens a little more than $125,000 exclusive of the issuance of bonds for special improvements. This seems like a tremendous sum but when the various items are explained it can be seen that Lawrence has an extremely efficient and economical city government. The facts and figures are available to the public. … For the second time, the Jayhawk basketball team humbled Nebraska on the Robinson Gymnasium court last night with a lopsided score of 36-17. … A relentless war on liquor and the liquor traffic was closed today when J.R. Woodward turned over the office of sheriff to W.R. Banning. Woodward had a wonderful record that the new sheriff will have to work hard to match. Woodward made nearly 100 arrests in his tenure and got convictions in many of the cases.”
