Veritas boys, girls fall

? Veritas Christian’s boys couldn’t hold on to an early lead, dropping a 63-43 decision to Olathe Christian on Thursday in the KCAA State Basketball Tournament at Olathe Christian School.

Veritas (7-15) led, 14-7, after the first quarter but Olathe Christian, helped by its full-court pressure defense, took a one-point halftime lead and extended its advantage from there.

“They wore us out, and our defense got pretty poor,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said. “We took care of ball, which had been a problem all season, but it looked like we were resting on defense to keep our legs.”

Taylor Zook led the Eagles with 15 points, while Ethan Kay added eight.

Veritas will play at 12:45 p.m. today in the consolation round against St. Mary’s Academy.

The Veritas Christian girls basketball team fell, 44-32, to Topeka Cair Paravel on Thursday in the KCAA State Basketball Tournament at Olathe Christian.

Kirsten Bennett led the Eagles (7-15) with nine points.

“That second quarter, we played a little bit faster than we wanted to,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said of the quarter where Veritas was outscored, 20-7. “It caused us to commit a few turnovers. We needed to play more under control. We did for the other three quarters. For the most part, the girls did a good job. I was really proud of how we played (Thursday).

Veritas will play in the consolation bracket at 12:45 p.m. today against Flint Hills Christian.
