From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 27, 1909: “The University of Kansas has reported on ‘flunks” for the past semester and most numerous were those in engineering, chemistry, mathematics and foreign languages. One hundred and 83 engineers were enrolled in chemistry and of these, 64 failed or got incompletes. … The state experimental station has sent out a bulletin telling of its success in vaccinating for hog cholera. Experts think the disease can be prevented by vaccination and early results of testing indicate that is true. … Hunters report exceptional good luck, mainly in slough areas, and it appears that ducks are due for a hard trip up the Kaw Valley because of the number of hunters who are getting their limits. … One of the oldest settlers of Douglas County and an original member of the Lawrence Townsite Co. died last night when F.A. Bailey died at his home after a short illness. He was born in 1827 in Massachusetts and came to this city in the second group of settlers in 1854. He worked in various free state organizations and had a great enthusiasm for Kansas.”
