Balanced Tongie boys rout Bonner

Baldwin boys fall to St. James, but Tonganoxie, BHS girls claim victories

Tonganoxie 83, Bonner Springs 62

Tonganoxie — Ten Chieftains played and 10 scored as Tonganoxie rolled over Bonner Springs.

Among Tonganoxie’s starting five, only point guard Jeremy Carlisle, who scored three points, didn’t reach double figures. Senior forward Jamie Everett led the way with 18, Keaton Schaffer had 17, Austin Smith had 14 points and 17 rebounds, and Jace Waters hit a pair of threes and finished with 10 points.

The Braves cut the THS lead to two with 4:14 to go in the third quarter, but Schaffer responded with a three-point play inside that sparked a 15-2 run to close the period.

Tonganoxie (9-6) then blew the game wide open with an 11-3 run to open the fourth quarter, getting six points from Everett and five from Schaffer — although two of Schaffer’s could have easily gone to Waters, who had an uncontested layup after a steal but unselfishly dished it to Schaffer for a transition basket.

Tonganoxie will play host to Santa Fe Trail on Friday. The game can be viewed on Sunflower Broadband channel 6 at 10:30 Friday night and at 11 a.m. Saturday.
