From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 7, 1909: “Many of those who came here for the huge and successful YMCA convention, which drew nearly 1,000, will be speakers at local churches this Sunday. Many fine speakers are being lined up. … The local carpenters union had more than 140 at its annual banquet last night and the state labor commissioner spoke briefly. … The Washburn Opera Co. will play in Lawrence Feb. 10. It is made up of the best that Topeka and Washburn College can offer.”
