KU softball 1-1 on opening day

? Kansas University’s softball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Texas-El Paso in its season opener, but then bounced back nicely to stun seventh-ranked Arizona, 5-1, Friday in the Kajikawa Classic.

It was KU’s first victory over a ranked opponent since a win over then-No. 3 Oklahoma on April. 28, 2007.

Liz Kocon singled up the middle in the fourth to score Val Chapple with what proved to be the game-winning run.

Val George (1-0) allowed just the one run off four hits over the full seven innings. George struck out eight.

KU scored three insurance runs with its final at-bat.

In the opener, Dougie McCaulley was 2-for-3 for the Jayhawks.

UTEP took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third with a solo home run, but KU tied it in the fourth on an RBI flyball from Chapple.

UTEP won it by scoring two runs off four hits in the seventh.

Kansas stranded three runners in the final three innings, including two in scoring position, while UTEP outhit the Jayhawks, 9-4.

The Jayhawks will face No. 9 Northwestern and No. 11 Stanford today.
