The Douglas County Commission, Eudora City Council and the Eudora Planning Commission heard Wednesday from a consulting firm about the results of a study on Douglas County Road 1061 and Eudora’s Main Street.

The study by BG Consultants was conducted to find possible solutions to the influx of traffic that the area could see after the Interstate 70 interchange at Tonganoxie is completed in November.

The interchange would take drivers south to Kansas Highway 10 on Leavenworth County Road 1, which turns into Eudora’s Main Street. Drivers would use County Road 1061 to reach K-10.

BG’s Jason Hoskinson presented three alignments that would allow traffic to bypass Main Street and County Road 1061. The options were an alignment to the west that would connect to K-10 using Winchester Road; an alignment to the east that would connect to K-10 using the County Road 442 interchange; and a regional alignment that would connect at the east and the west ends of Eudora.

The consensus was that the regional alignment, which could be cost-prohibitive, was the best option, though an interim project would be needed until funding was secured. “This is an era where the defining line may not be what we would like, but what we can stand,” Douglas County Commissioner Charles Jones said.

The group will continue to meet periodically to discuss the implications of the interchange in the context of a five-county transportation study being done by Douglas, Johnson, Miami, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties.
