Lions’ rally falls short

? Lawrence High’s girls basketball team stormed back in the fourth quarter, but ran out of time in a 48-42 loss to Shawnee Heights on Saturday in the Thunderbird Classic.

The Lions, who trailed by 15 points early in the fourth quarter, outscored Heights, 20-13, in the final period.

“We made too many mistakes early on,” LHS coach Kristin Mallory said. “We were playing the 12 o’clock game, and it looked like we didn’t come ready to play. The intensity wasn’t there. As well as we played the night before (a 49-37 victory over Derby), we were pretty much on the other side of the coin today. We didn’t really start play until the last four minutes.”

Taylor Bird led the Lions with 13 points, followed by Cassie Potter and Haley Parker with nine points apiece.

LHS (5-8) will play host to Olathe East at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
