Officers are investigating the reported rape of a homeless person at a Lawrence business, police said.

Police said they discovered the incident at 7:21 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of West Sixth Street. Officers had been called to the scene regarding an unknown emergency. The 44-year-old victim was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

A 59-year-old man was charged Friday with attempted rape in the case, Douglas County prosecutors said. The Journal-World generally does not identify suspects of sex crimes unless there is a conviction.

The suspect pleaded not guilty to the charge and is being held in jail on $30,000 bond, said prosecutors. He was ordered to return to court Tuesday.
