Twisted view

To the editor:

Cal Thomas, in the Journal World’s Christmas Eve edition, challenges his readers to evaluate their personal satisfaction in light of the many material blessings they enjoy, especially compared to generations past. Good! He also reminds readers to remember why it is that Christmas is celebrated. Fine, and most appropriate.

Mr. Thomas, however — not unlike certain citizens of our community who find offensive political messages in the Kansas University Vespers — adds his peace and goodwill to the season by inferring that President Obama (our “socialist” leader), speaking about the spirit of Christmas to schoolchildren in the nation’s capital, invoked the name of Jesus as a means for “government (to take) from the productive and (give) to the nonproductive,” and further stretched that “to (Obama), Jesus is a socialist.”

I would argue that Mr. Thomas and others of his ilk actually desecrate the spirit of Christmas by exploiting its most important and beautiful elements (peace, love and giving) as a sad pretext for their twisted political views. Merry Christmas, Mr. Thomas, and thank you, Journal-World, for somehow finding room for his blather on Christmas Eve.
