100 years ago: Two injured in bobsled accident

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 30, 1909: “Herman Meuffles, 13, and Allen Harris, 11, were severely injured yesterday when a bob sled on which they were coasting down Lee Street Hill collided with a Tennessee Street street car. They had a boy watching traffic but the boy apparently felt it was safe and gave the go-ahead. Both had head injuries and many cuts and bruises and one has a broken leg. However, it does not appear there were any skull fractures. Both are in serious condition. … KU football coach Bert Kennedy is not pleased with the rules changes that make for a more open game but his players seem to like the idea of being able to pass the ball more often. … Examinations are under way for those wanting to be census enumerators in 1910 and there are many seeking the 22 openings.”
