Humane society voted best in state

Online voters have chosen the Lawrence Humane Society as the best in Kansas, earning the shelter a $1,000 grant.

The Web site theanimalrescuesite.com gives away more than $100,000 annually to shelters that garner the most online votes, said Midge Grinstead, the shelter’s director.

She said she was pleased the shelter won “bragging rights” by placing first in the statewide competition.

The money will go into the shelter’s general fund, Grinstead said. As with other nonprofits, she said, the shelter is experiencing a downturn in funds with the slumping economy.
