Christmas holiday to close offices, public services

Most government offices and public services in Lawrence and Douglas County will be closed Friday for Christmas.

All city and state offices will be closed Friday, as will offices in area towns.

Douglas County and District Court offices will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Federal offices in the General Services Administration and federal courts will be closed Friday.

Banks will be closed Friday.

Lawrence Transit System and T-Lift buses will not run Friday.

Parking at meters in downtown Lawrence will be free on Friday.

The holiday will not affect residential solid waste collection in Lawrence. Commercial waste collection routes scheduled for Friday will be collected on either Thursday or Saturday.

South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Mass., will be closed Thursday and Friday. East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St., and Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St., and Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and closed Friday. All centers will be open regular hours Saturday.

The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will be open Thursday for lap swimming from 5:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and the zero depth children’s area from 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. The water slide and diving area will be open from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The center will be closed Friday.

Carl Knox Natatorium, 1901 La., will be closed until Jan. 4.

Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will be open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and closed Friday. Eagle Bend Golf Course will be open, weather permitting, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and will be closed Friday. The course will reopen with its normal winter hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, weather permitting.

Lawrence Public Library will be closed Thursday and Friday.

U.S. Postal Service will not make regular mail delivery Friday, and post offices will be closed. UPS and FedEx deliveries will not be made Friday.

All activities at the Lawrence Senior Center, including clubs, classes and the noon meal, will be canceled Thursday and Friday. Home delivery and Bus 62 senior service meals are canceled Thursday and Friday.

Meals also will not be served either day at Babcock Place, Edgewood Place, and the Lecompton, Eudora and Baldwin City senior centers. Lawrence Meals on Wheels will not deliver Friday.

The Community Christmas Dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt. Anyone who would like a meal delivered should call 841-1516 after 6 a.m. on Christmas Day.

The business office of the Journal-World will be open for walk-ins and phone inquiries from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday.

USA Today will not be published Friday.

State law mandates that liquor stores be closed Friday, and stores might close early Thursday.
