A nine-point outburst by the Tonganoxie High boys basketball team in the final 48 seconds wasn’t nearly enough to salvage a home game against Santa Fe Trail on Friday night.

A scoreless drought in the 7:12 leading up to that point was the difference.

THS sophomore center Dane Erickson hit a jumper to cut a deficit that was once as large as 12 to five late in the third quarter, but it wasn’t until a Keaton Schaffer drive in the final minute that THS (2-3) scored another point.

Santa Fe Trail went on a 12-0 run during that drought.

Tonganoxie coach Shawn Phillips lamented the team’s defense.

“We lost that game on the defensive end of the floor,” Phillips said. “We’ve got to defend better if we want to win.”

Schaffer led THS with 21 points. Erickson scored nine, as did sub Austin Vickers.

Tonganoxie doesn’t play again until a Jan. 8 home date with K.C. Bishop Ward.

La Cygne — Coulter Vestal scored 16 points to lead four Cardinals in double-digit scoring, and Eudora cruised against Prairie View.

Justin Ballock and Drew Noble scored 11 apiece, and Connor Scott added 10 points for the Cardinals.

Eudora (4-2) will play Baldwin Jan. 8 at Eudora.

De Soto — Mason Wedel scored 21 points to help lead De Soto past Atchison.

De Soto had a four-point lead at halftime, but the DHS defense held the Redmen to only three field goals in the second half, and the Wildcats pulled away late.

Brandan Philbrook scored 11 and Dylan Burford seven for the Wildcats.

De Soto (4-2) will play Jan. 5 at K.C. Wyandotte.

Tonganoxie — It took three quarters, but the Tonganoxie High girls basketball team finally decided to start playing.

After a so-so first period and a dismal stretch through the second and third, the Chieftains turned it on in the fourth to secure a victory over Santa Fe Trail.

“When it became time to step up, we started playing harder,” THS coach Randy Kraft said after his team scored 22 fourth-quarter points, eclipsing the team’s 18-point total from the first three periods.

THS (2-3) trailed the Chargers by eight after three quarters, but came out aggressive offensively to open the fourth on an 11-2 run.

Tonganoxie senior Lauren Hall jump-started the stretch with a baseline jumper.

Then freshman point guard Hannah Kemp drove the length of the floor for a lay-in before Tavia Brown hit a jumper, and Hall drained a three.

The Chieftains’ other freshman, forward Jenny Whitledge, scored inside with 3:20 remaining to give THS its first lead of the second half.

Kraft said increased effort led to the game-saving spurt.

“We’re so young that we have to get in a rhythm, and the harder we play, the better rhythm we get in,” Kraft said.

The game was tied at 33, but Hall hit her third three of the game with just under a minute left, and Whitledge and Andie Jeannin combined to go 4-for-4 from the foul line down the stretch.

The Chieftains are off until Jan. 8, when they play host to K.C. Bishop Ward.

De Soto — Shelbi Petty scored a game-high 18 points, and Kelsey Fisher added 14 to help lead the De Soto girls to an easy victory.

Petty scored 12 of De Soto’s 27 first-quarter points, and seven Wildcats made field goals in the first quarter.

De Soto also controlled the glass, as Amy Bilger had seven rebounds, and Katie Williams and Tami Crow pulled down six boards.

De Soto (3-3) will play Jan. 6 at K.C. Washington.
