As organizers of the annual Community Christmas Dinner in Lawrence were making preparations on Friday, they came up short on the number of turkeys and hams they will need to prepare for the big meal.

Organizers still need 18 20-pound turkeys and 10 5-pound hams.

Overall they have already collected 32 turkeys and 30 hams, but they need more to provide 900 meals at the annual dinner, which is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

Deb Engstrom said organizers are hoping that donors will come through by Monday at the latest. A total of 900 meals were served last year.

“This is the only way a lot of people get a special meal on Christmas,” Engstrom said. “It’s a community dinner. Anybody can come and enjoy the camaraderie of the meal.”

She said anyone who wants to should donate a frozen turkey or ham by Monday to give organizers time to thaw them. Donors can call Engstrom at 785-330-3105.

The dinner is served at the church on Christmas Day, but volunteers also deliver meals. Anyone who would like a meal delivered should call 841-1516 after 6 a.m. on Christmas Day.
